22.06.09 WET DE LA MUSIQUE
Just like the buds that are uncurling on my balcony, summer
is coaxing all of Berlin’s musicians out onto the streets.
Every corner of the city has turned into a performance space
and birdsong is doing battle with brass bands. The guy at the cigarette stall sets up a turntable, the busker plugs himself
into an amp and, under my balcony, a four-piece gypsy band serenades the street.

This urban Berlin orchestra reached a climax yesterday when the annual ‘Fete de la Musique’ came
to town. This open city jam session (that started life in France in 1982) is now held in over one hundred countries in Europe on the 21st June - the first day of the summer ....
